Partnership Sleigh Ride

Hey Music Students! Let's go on a sleigh ride......Well maybe not a real one, but a musical one.
Thank you njltiger for sharing this video.
What instruments did you hear in the music?

Leroy Anderson wrote the song Sleigh Ride.
Thank you wikipedia for sharing this picture.
Leroy Anderson was an American Composer. A composer is a person who writes music.
He was alive from 1908-1975.
He wrote the song Sleigh Ride when he was living in Boston one summer.

Let's watch the Boston Pops play Sleigh Ride. Can you recognize the instruments you named?
Thank you luckysmusic for sharing this video.
What is the name of that instrument that is making the cracking sound?

Did you know that Sleigh Ride has words you can sing?
A man named Mitchell Paris wrote lyrics to the song so that we can sing it.
Let's give it a try!
Thank you merrychristmas for sharing this video.

Thanks for going on a Sleigh Ride with me today!

4th Grade Recorders!

West Music Company
Fourth Grade Students/Parents/Guardians,
The time has come to begin Recorder Karate in music class! We will begin learning to play the soprano recorder. During each class we will practice a song and master a new note. Students will then test in the music “dojo” and earn belts for their recorder.
In order to do so, each child must have a recorder.
You may order a recorder from the school. We will be ordering Harmony Renaissance Recorders from West Music company. The recorders come with a storage case, cleaning rod and will be labeled with your child’s name. The price is $3.85 in cash or check made out to Partnership and includes the instrument, a carrying case, and the cost of shipping. (Please use exact change/cash.)
Or you can provide your own recorder for your child. You may use a recorder that you already own or purchase one, however, please be sure that the recorder is a soprano recorder with baroque-english fingering
If you need more info please email or call Miss Taylor!  btaylor@wcpss.net    919.856.8200

What's up Chipmunk?

Some of you asked for it...So here it is.......THE CHIPMUNK SONG!

Oh......a chipmunk, a chipmunk sitting on a limb.
Oh he winked at me, so I winked at him.
Then I picked up a chip and I hit him on the chin,
And he said, "Hey You! Don't do that again!"

So I skipped, skipped, skipped, skipped, skipped along with him.
Then I stopped, and I pat, and I clapped and I spin.
Oh I skipped, skipped, skipped, skipped, skipped along with him.
Then I stopped, and I pat, and I clapped and I end.

MUSIC HISTORY ALERT!!!   The Chipmunk song is an American Folksong. It was originally used as a song to sing around a campfire when you go camping with a group. People began singing it back in the 1950s and over the years the words have been changed as the song has been passed along.

Check out the original words:

Oh a chipmunk, chipmunk sitting on a limb
And he winked at me and I at him
So I picked up a chip and I hit him on the chin
And he said: "Young man, don't you try that again!"

Hey skip along, skip along a Josie
Hey skip along and a skip along a Joe
Hey skip along, skip along a Josie
Hey skip along and a skip along a Joe

Pretty cool! The original words are great, but I like our Partnership version the best!

CHALLENGE:
Can you sing it on your own? Or maybe do the dance with some friends?
Could you organize a group of students to play the game?
Go for it!

Give it a Rest

We having been working on reading and playing rhythms in music.

Can you read this rhythm?
from vicfirth.com

The rests (or silences) in music are my favorite.
I think the silence makes the sound more enjoyable.

Here is a really cool song and video about rests.
Check it out!

Tempo

Students in 2nd and 3rd grade have been using the old school hand jive 'Miss Mary Mack' to discover the different levels of Tempo.

Tempo is a music word that means speed. We have been singing songs, playing instruments, and dancing to experiment with different tempo.

Here are some levels of Tempo:
Largo = Slow
Presto = Very Fast
Moderato = Medium or moderate

First Week - Rhythm Challenge One and Two

Thanks to all the students and staff at Partnership for making the first week of Music Class so awesome!

Here is a pic of Rhythm Challenge One and Two for you to practice at home.

You can play it on a drum, piano, guitar, or your recorder.
You can play it using an app on your iPod or smart phone.

You can also make your own instrument using things around your house to play the rhythms on.
(I like to turn a small trash can or bucket upside down to make a drum and use a hair brush as a drum stick.)

See you in class!
